Barry W Hughes’ photographic works occupy a liminal space between scientific and subjective description. Various tactics, sometimes deceptive, are employed to reflect upon contemporary photographic image culture, referencing particular scientific, pseudo-scientific and social moments that often involve a degree of coincidence within their respective narrative.
Photographer, writer and editor Barry W Hughes' works have been published and exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions in Ireland, Germany and China.
Since establishing the award-nominated SMBHmag | SuperMassiveBlackHole online photography magazine in 2009, Hughes has been a contributing writer to HOTSHOE since 2012, and has contributed to other international publications including British Journal of Photography and Photo-Eye.
He has delivered lectures on his professional practice for universities including University of Westminster, Coventry School of Art & Design, Kingston School of Art, University for the Creative Arts Farnham and Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology.
He has also curated exhibitions, reviewed portfolios and given talks for the likes of University of Middlesex, The Photographers' Gallery, Belfast Exposed, Sirius Arts Centre, Photology, PhotoIreland Festival, Belfast Photo Festival, Format Photo Festival, Look Photo Festival, Manchester Photographic and PhotoBook London.
